Engineering Semantic Attribution Theory|Preface

流程仍依照原本方式運作;

即便 ESAT 沒有寫入契約,它仍能以「語意對齊的工具」形式被使用;

Pay-Path

當語意能被清楚放回位置,文件就能彼此對齊;角色之間的對話也能有共同軌道;

ESAT Preface|Why Engineering Semantic Attribution Theory Exists

Engineering Semantic Attribution Theory|Preface

Why does ESAT exist?

In fields such as interior design and interior renovation, throughout both discussion and execution, communication between the demand side and the supply side of Spatial Decision Makers (SDP) has long relied on experience, oral explanations, and habitual expressions.

Phrases such as
“this is normal,”
“everyone in the industry does it this way,”
“no one would ever do what you’re asking,”
or
“why doesn’t this function exist, why didn’t you say so earlier?”
“this is a defect,”
“it doesn’t matter, this is your responsibility,”
“why is this so different from what I imagined,”

are frequently interpreted differently by different roles. As a result, contracts and quotations, construction discussions and acceptance processes, as well as post-completion warranty negotiations, often fail to maintain stable semantics. These semantic discrepancies are extremely common on construction sites and create communication states that are difficult to align.

Engineering Semantic Attribution Theory (ESAT) transforms these ambiguous statements into observable and markable engineering semantics. By using semantic units such as responsibility-role semantics, specification boundary semantics, acceptance semantics, and evidence semantics as shared coordinates, ESAT enables SDPs to describe responsibility attribution, boundary positions, and project states within the same semantic layer—reducing misunderstandings caused by semantic drift.

All semantics are presented in a discrete form, serving solely to mark semantic positions while remaining as close as possible to observable facts. ESAT does not construct inference chains, does not provide causal judgments, and does not generate reversible responsibility conclusions. How conclusions are ultimately reached is determined by SDPs outside of ESAT itself. ESAT only provides a set of semantic positions that can be read and referenced, without directly inferring outcomes.

1|The problem ESAT addresses: giving semantics a position

ESAT has never aimed to handle responsibility itself.
Instead, it asks:

Where is the semantic located?
What does it point to?
Who does it lean toward?

It converts “ambiguous and dispute-prone” statements found in engineering texts into semantic positions that can be explicitly marked—without inference, without calculation, and without requiring consensus.

Its purpose is not to tell you who should be responsible,
but to allow every party to clearly see:

  • how the original semantic was formed
  • where it is positioned
  • which role it leans toward

Once semantics are returned to their proper positions, meaningful dialogue can begin.

2|What ESAT does not do: not law, not judgment, not process

ESAT is a semantic system, not an adjudication system.

It does not handle:

  • fault
  • causality
  • monetary amounts
  • proportions
  • legal responsibility
  • schedule calculations
  • warranty determinations
  • automated inference

Nor does it attempt to decide who is right or wrong.

ESAT does only one thing:
it provides semantic positions, allowing events to be read rather than guessed.

Accordingly, ESAT can assist in reading documents but does not replace any engineering process or intervene in legal determinations. If both parties agree, ESAT may be formally incorporated into a contract, allowing subsequent review, negotiation, and arbitration texts to return to the same semantic coordinates. Even so, final conclusions and arbitration decisions are always made by humans. From beginning to end, ESAT is only a tool.

3|Why ESAT is necessary: a consistent language across roles, stages, and documents

Engineering is a system involving multiple roles, multiple stages, and multiple documents.

  • Quotations use one logic
  • Contracts use another
  • Construction sites have their own language
  • LINE messages resemble real-time handwritten notes
  • Acceptance and warranty revert to formal text

Each language form describes engineering phenomena, yet none share a common semantic coordinate system.

ESAT’s role is to provide that shared coordinate system, allowing engineering semantics to be read consistently across all contexts:

  • quotations and contracts do not contradict each other
  • oral records can be traced back to later documents
  • acceptance statements can be traced to original semantics
  • warranty negotiations can return to clear semantic positions
  • documents can be read quickly during mediation or review

ESAT’s semantic layer does not rely on background knowledge, professional expertise, experience, or intuition. It remains consistent across scenarios, countries, and roles.

4|ESAT and engineering processes: a semantic base layer attachable to all documents

ESAT does not require modifying workflows, rewriting documents, or rebuilding operational methods.

It functions like a transparent base layer that can be overlaid on any engineering document:

  • before contracts
  • within quotations
  • during construction
  • at acceptance
  • throughout the warranty period
  • during dispute resolution

Existing processes continue as they are.
ESAT simply makes semantics clearer, more transparent, and more traceable.

5|Who is ESAT for?

ESAT requires neither engineering background nor legal knowledge.
It applies to all participants involved in engineering decision-making (SDP):

  • Demand side: clearer understanding of boundaries and responsibility semantics
  • Supply side: clearer presentation of semantics and states
  • Design / construction teams: a consistent method for recording events
  • Review and arbitration bodies: semantics can be read without guessing intent
  • AI systems: engineering texts can be parsed using fixed vocabulary

As long as the current semantic phenomenon can be described, ESAT can operate.

6|How ESAT is activated: any role, any stage

ESAT is not limited by role or time.
Whether demand side, supply side, or even arbitration bodies, anyone who needs to restore semantics to clear positions can activate ESAT immediately.

ESAT can be applied before construction begins:
For example, when supply and demand parties are drafting contracts and quotations, ESAT’s semantic structure can clarify future semantic boundaries, responsibilities, and expectations—reducing the emotional and time costs of potential disputes. ESAT may even be written directly into contract appendices, enabling arbitration bodies to interpret disputes using the same semantic coordinates.

ESAT can also be applied during construction:
When discrepancies arise between drawings and reality, between outcomes and expectations, or when parties hold inconsistent interpretations of the same issue, ESAT can be activated to mark semantic positions first—allowing all parties to quickly identify the location of the dispute and make effective decisions, rather than falling into unproductive emotional conflict.

ESAT is equally applicable after completion:
During acceptance, payment, or the usage and warranty phase, ESAT can again be activated to return semantics to their proper positions, helping clarify issues and avoiding intuition-based disputes.

Even if ESAT is not written into the contract, it can still function as a semantic alignment tool. If formally incorporated, it further enables review and arbitration bodies to quickly understand semantic positions during disputes, making interpretive standards clearer and document alignment easier.

7|The positioning of ESAT v3.1: semantic positions, not conclusions

Version 3.1 further clarifies ESAT’s positioning:

  • semantic entry via BF / AF
  • final outputs limited to Do-Path and Pay-Path
  • semantic agents may each generate their own semantic positions
  • no requirement for consistency, no correction, no computation
  • the Public Semantic Layer is the only citable version
  • all terminology is protected by Vocabulary Lock

ESAT v3.1 does not produce conclusions.
It is responsible only for precise semantic positioning.

8|Simplified IP statement for ESAT

ESAT’s semantic vocabulary and structure constitute a fixed system, subject to the following restrictions:

  • fixed terminology may not be renamed, modified, or expanded
  • internal operations or blackbox logic may not be reverse-engineered
  • extension into workflows, algorithms, formulas, or decision trees is prohibited
  • semantic positions may be cited but not reinterpreted
  • ESAT carries no legal force and does not constitute engineering advice
  • only the Public Semantic Layer may be cited

Conclusion

Many people say that in interior design and renovation, true professionalism lies not in aesthetics or spatial planning ability, but in communication skills. An excellent designer must possess strong coordination and communication abilities—whether dealing with clients or contractors.

Yet strong communication skills are a rare talent. This also explains why design and construction sites frequently experience disputes and conflicts. What designers and clients lack is not effort, but semantic stability.

When semantics are returned to their proper positions, documents align with each other; dialogue between roles gains a shared trajectory; and engineering decisions move from intuition to semantics.

ESAT does not exist to decide who is right or wrong.
It exists to make engineering language more consistent, more readable, and more discussable.

It is a semantic positioning system,
and a foundational linguistic infrastructure long missing—yet deeply needed—in the engineering field.
